FRACTAL SUN

Progressive metal from Costa Rica

Fractal Sun is a progressive metal band from Costa Rica whose music blends djent, symphonic elements and cinematic textures inside a richly developed sci fi universe. The band consists of vocalist Hellen Quirós, guitarists Isabel Viquez and Johnny Víquez, bassist Santiago Mejía and drummer Sofia Dove, also known as Sunfyre.

Their debut album Turmoil (2020) introduced the beginning of an ambitious narrative following Orianna, a scientist who steals the only spaceship capable of saving humanity and escapes a dying Earth. The record established the foundations of the band’s conceptual world, combining heavy modern prog with sweeping symphonic touches and reflective storytelling.

In the years that followed, Fractal Sun expanded their universe through a series of singles, including Trail of Hope, where their blend of djent, progressive metal and cinematic sound design becomes even more vivid. Their music bridges technical modern metal with emotional melodic writing, drawing influence from artists such as Animals As Leaders, Plini, Allan Holdsworth, Rush, Haken, Tesseract, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Tool, Between the Buried and Me, The Contortionist and Nightwish.

Fractal Sun has been steadily gaining recognition, performing with Obscura in 2023 and appearing on the 2025 edition of 70000 Tons of Metal With their richly built universe, modern progressive sound and a lineup driven by strong musicianship, Fractal Sun stands out as one of the most fascinating acts in the new wave of progressive metal.
