DAWN OF OUROBOROS
From California, United States
Dawn of Ouroboros is a blackened progressive metal band from Oakland, California, formed in 2018 by guitarist Tony Thomas and vocalist Chelsea Murphy. Blending elements of atmospheric black metal, progressive death metal, post metal and melodic introspection, the band has quickly developed a sound that feels both expansive and deeply emotive. Their music moves effortlessly between aggression and serenity, weaving tremolo driven intensity, radiant clean passages and expressive vocal work into something unmistakably their own.
Their debut The Art of Morphology (2020) introduced this hybrid identity with remarkable clarity, earning praise for its ability to merge extreme metal with cinematic atmosphere and luminous melodic writing. They expanded their palette with Velvet Incandescence (2023), recorded with Nick Loiacono and mastered by Jack Shirley, a record that placed greater emphasis on emotional pacing, melodic expression and textural nuance.
In 2025, Dawn of Ouroboros released Bioluminescence, their most ambitious and immersive work to date. The album highlights the band’s ability to balance ethereal beauty with visceral heaviness, featuring soaring vocal lines from Chelsea Murphy, dynamic shifts between ferocity and calm and compositions that feel expansive, fluid and deeply personal. Critics praised the album for its emotional resonance, its rich sense of atmosphere and its refined narrative tone.
Dawn of Ouroboros’ lineup, completed by guitarists Ian Baker, bassist David Scanlon and drummer Ron Bertrand, has allowed the project to evolve into a powerful live act. They have toured both the West and East Coasts of the United States, performing alongside artists such as Anciients, Exist, Sadness, Vintersea and Tomarum. These tours helped bring their textured, atmospheric and emotionally charged sound to a broader audience, strengthening their presence within the North American progressive and extreme metal scenes.
